Afera Lawona i operacja Susannah

Israel - Crimes

Events from the history of Israel related to the scandal that broke out after the failed secret operation of the Israeli intelligence service known as Operation Susannah. During this venture in the summer of 1954, Jewish agents placed bombs in buildings located in Egypt, but mostly belonging to the United States and Great Britain. They did so in the hope that the Muslim Brotherhood, communists, indefinable malcontents or local nationalists would be blamed for the explosions. These events became more widely known as the Lawon scandal or Lawon affair, because of them the Israeli defense minister Pinchas Lawon was forced to resign.

Israel officially confessed to carrying out the operation in 2005, when President Moshe Kacaw honored nine Egyptian Jews – agents who took part in it.

In the early 1950s, the United States began an active policy towards Egypt. This contrasted with the actions of Great Britain, which ceased to be a global colonial power. Israel feared this, especially the withdrawal of British troops from the Suez Canal, which could have encouraged Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser to attack Israel. Initially, the Jewish state sought to change this situation through diplomatic means, but to no avail.

In the summer of 1954, Colonel Binjamin Gibli, head of Aman – Israeli military intelligence, began the operation of “Susannah”. Its purpose was to carry out bombings and other acts of sabotage in Egypt, which was to destabilize the internal situation in this country, and thus block the withdrawal of British armed forces from the region.

The above events were secret until 2005. Israel officially did not admit the organization of bomb attacks in Egypt, although the details of this action were widely known.

Operation “Susannah” and the Lawon scandal had catastrophic consequences for Israel for several reasons:

Israel has lost its international credibility, especially in its relations with the US and Great Britain. He rebuilt his position for years. The failure of this action led to doubts about the effectiveness of this type of undertaking – especially in cases where provocations were used. The scandal of Operation Susannah led to a decline in voter confidence in the ruling Mapai party and severely weakened it.
